I've been asking the same question. I have a few guesses, but none of them make it any more reasonable than why they brought any of us. That's the bigger question I have.

[ he seems hyperfocused on various locals gathered at the bar, tracking their movements and keeping an eye on the door for anyone new who's coming in. he will eventually, maybe, be brave enough to move closer to the actual bar to eavesdrop but for now he's mostly monitoring. ]

Observin' is best done if no one thinks you're doing the observing. People often have a strange sense if they're being watched, an itchiness at the back of the head. You ever felt that? Sink back into a bit more if you don't want everyone to notice you back.
